Introduction
Steam, the platform for digital game distribution, offers a vast array of games for every type of gamer. I recently conducted some analysis on a Steam dataset containing over 85,000 games. The dataset was taken from Kaggle uploaded by Martin Bustos. My analysis reveals interesting trends, standout titles, and key developers that make up the Steam gaming world.
Note: The dataset was collected in the beginning of 2024, so we will only be analyzing till the start of 2024. The analysis notebook is available on Kaggle.
Let’s dive in!
The Journey of Game Releases
Early Beginnings (2005-2010)
- Foundation Years: Steam launched in 2003 with classic games like Half-Life 2 and Counter-Strike, setting the stage for its future success.
Indie Explosion (2011-2016)
- Rise of Indie Games: Steam Greenlight in 2012 opened doors for indie developers.
Recent Boom (2017-Present)
- Massive Growth: In 2023 alone, more than 15,000 new games were released, showcasing the ease of game development and Steam’s global reach.
The Curious Case of Pre-2003 Games
Interestingly, the dataset includes games dating back to 1997, even though Steam itself was launched in 2003. This can be due to following reasons:
Retroactive Listings: Steam has expanded its catalog to include many classic games from before its launch. Titles like Team Fortress Classic (1999), POSTAL (1997), and Counter-Strike (2000) are among those that have found a new audience on the platform. These additions allow a new generation of gamers to experience the roots of modern gaming and appreciate the evolution of game design over time.
Re-releases and Remasters: Older games are often re-released or remastered for modern platforms. These versions are integrated into Steam’s catalog with their original release dates, preserving their historical significance while making them accessible to contemporary audiences.
Historical Data Integration: Developers and publishers sometimes add older titles to their Steam library to ensure their entire portfolio is available digitally. This includes everything from cult classics to major milestones in gaming history.
Examples of Pre-2003 Games in the Dataset
Mafia (2002)
Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver (1999)
Team Fortress Classic (1999)
POSTAL (1997)
Counter-Strike (2000)
